Music in the City ft. Tanja Miric and Sarah Waters

April 7 @ 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm

Together with the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Cathedral offers Music in the City as a gift to the Jackson community.

For April, we welcome Tanja Miric (guitar) and Sarah Waters (mezz-soprano/piano)

Eklektiko is a guitar and piano/vocal duo that explores the music of the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and beyond. Tanja Miric, a native of Bosnia, is both a classical guitarist and the arranger of much of the repertoire. The traditional folk songs of the Balkan peninsula are sometimes soulful, sometimes playful, and they often tell colorful stories.  Sarah Waters, mezzo-soprano, sings Tanja’s versions of these songs, which are Bosnian, Croatian, and Greek in origin.  Eklektiko also delves into the guitar and piano duets of Boccherini (writing in a Spanish style) and Diabelli (in an Austrian style), as well as contemporary French composer Erik Marchelie. From the haunting melodies of the mountains to the graceful sophistication of the salon, Eklektiko offers an eclectic and expressive musical journey.

About the performers

Sarah Waters, a native of Washington, D.C., loves to sing in as many languages as possible, although Latin is probably her favorite. She teaches music history and voice at Belhaven University, and Choctaw hymns have been a recent focus of her research. Sarah also plays the piano at a local church and enjoys accompaniment work. She studied voice at Jackson State University with Dr. Phyllis Lewis-Hale and recently completed her D.M.A. in church music at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. You can catch Sarah jamming on the folk harp with her Irish band, Mind the Dresser, at CelticFest.

Tanja Mirić, native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been playing the guitar for over three decades. She holds music degrees from Mississippi College, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Minnesota.

Whether performing as a soloist or with Duo Mirić (guitar duo), her passion for connecting through music has taken her to stages such as the Guitar Foundation of America Showcase (Louisville, KY), Fort Worth Guitar Festival, St. Louis Classical Guitar Society and the Schubert Club Courtroom Concert Series (SaintPaul, MN).

Tanja is also a dedicated arranger and author, with two dozen published books for solo and duo guitar. She’s been honored with multiple grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission in support of her creative work.
